Celebrate the new season at the 7th Annual Winter Welcome!

Saturday, Dec. 7 in Downtown Storrs

November 12, 2019 – The Mansfield Downtown Partnership invites residents and visitors to celebrate the new season at its 7th Annual Winter Welcome in Downtown Storrs! This free event is open to everyone and will take place rain, snow, or shine. Winter Welcome will start at 3:00 PM and continue through 6:00 PM.

The fun begins early with two performances of Peter and the Wolf by National Marionette Theatre at the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Tickets for these performances can be purchased in advance at the Ballard Institute, by calling 860.486.8580, or online at bimp.ticketleap.com. For more information, please visit bimp.uconn.edu.

Visitors will enjoy ice sculptures by UConn Dining Services on Betsy Paterson Square; a chance to see a fire truck up-close and meet a fire fighter with the Mansfield Fire Department; an interactive performance by “The Snow Queen” with Wonderland Parties, a preview performance of The Nutcracker, A Community Performance presented by Mansfield Parks & Recreation and Miss Kelly Productions, and a visit from Santa Claus at Barnes & Noble UConn.

Participating downtown businesses will offer seasonal sales and specials, and there will be hands-on activities at The Flower Pot and the Mansfield Library Express. At E. O. Smith High School, the Storrs Regional FFA will hold its annual Christmas tree sale (from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM).

Strolling musicians and carolers, including The Chordials, Consonare Choral Community, Drop the Bass, Husky Hungama, The Rolling Tones, and the UConn Marching Band Tubas, will delight visitors with pop-up performances throughout the downtown. At 5:00 PM, the E. O. Smith Choirs will lead a Community Sing-Along on Paterson Square to cap off the festivities.

New this year is a Trim-A-Tree Contest! The Partnership invites Mansfield businesses, organizations, groups, and clubs to create their own unique tree for Winter Welcome. Trees may be winter themed, holiday themed, or any theme of the group’s choice. Thinking outside of the box is encouraged! Trees should be 4 feet to 6 feet in height; applicants will provide their own tree. For entry guidelines and registration information, please visit downtownstorrs.org/winterwelcome. The deadline to register for the new Trim-A-Tree Contest is Wednesday, November 27. Space is limited, and early registration is encouraged!

The trees will be displayed on and around Betsy Paterson Square during Winter Welcome, and visitors will vote on their favorite festive displays. Winners will be announced following the Community Sing-Along.

During this year’s Winter Welcome, Mansfield Resident Troopers will collect donations of unwrapped toys and gift cards as part of their annual Stuff-a-Cruiser effort. They will be on Paterson Square throughout the event. The toys and gift cards will be donated directly to families in need in Mansfield by the Town of Mansfield Human Services Department.

Parking is available in the Downtown Storrs Parking Garage, which is free for the first two hours and $1 per hour thereafter, with a daily maximum charge of $8. The walk from the garage to Betsy Paterson Square takes approximately 2 minutes.
